How You Can Fight Multitasking to Avoid Stress

Multi-tasking is a great way to get stuff done, but it also leads to a lot of stress. One of the best ways to reduce the stress in your work day is to just focus on one task, and leave multitasking for your coworkers.

But how can you fight the urge to multi-task?
  • Listen to music — You can really only do two or three things at a time, so working and listening to music will be those “two” things you can do. Make it soft music that will help you to focus on your work, and you’ll get a lot more done without as many distractions!
  • Close windows — Is that computer window just calling out your name as you try to focus on your work? Perhaps you need to send that email quickly, or you want to check out a website real quick. To get rid of the temptation to multi-task, close the window of the program that is tempting you to do more than one thing at a time.
  • Get up — If your desk is the place where you are most likely to multitask, get up and go to a conference room or another office. You’ll have a much easier time focusing on your work in the new surroundings, and you’ll be able to fight the temptation to multitask.
  • Turn it off — If your job is to make calls, fill out paperwork, or do anything that doesn’t involve a computer or smart phone, turn off the device. Without the constant hum of the PC or the bright light of your smart phone to tempt you, you can keep that laser focus on the job at hand.
  • Sign out — Email notifications are the worst thing in the world for those with focus issues. Seeing that “1 unread message” notice can drive you mad, and you’re guaranteed to check it sooner rather than later. Just sign out of your email account, and let those emails sit in your inbox as you work.
  • Sleep – Sleeping well practically provides you with as much energy as the food you eat. Great sleep will also allow you to focus on 1 subject at a time without getting easily distracted. Distraction is what tires out your mind and weakens you overall from being a good multi-tasker. A good bed like a Tempur-Pedic or and natural version like Essentia should be on your list of priority purchases.
Yes, multitasking is the best way to get a lot accomplished at once, but sometimes it’s going to be more stressful than is good for you. There are times when you want to avoid multitasking, and just focus on the work at hand.

With these tips, you’ll keep your focus on what you’re doing, and leave the multi-tasking to the pros!
