  • Melissa,  I haven’t tried them myself, but I see stress relief CDs on the shelves all the time at Target.  I don’t know if the material is just “noise machine” type sounds like waves and wind or if there is composed music.  But it might be worth a look.  Most of the kiosks I’ve seen have listening stations where you can preview the material.

  • I took a music therapy class in college.

    The music or sounds you choose should mean something to you – something that reminds you of a happy time or place. Most recommendations suggest going for something instrumental or few vocals, and simpler melodies instead of full orchestras, quiet instead of heavy metal… but if heavy metal relaxes you, go for it.

    I have a set of recordings of prog-rock that relaxes me because of the associations I make with the music.

    In the music for yoga question I posted a link for Cape Cod bird sounds which also relaxes me.
